Palm oil fruit
Image Plante

Palm trees, which are oil producing, are similar to coconut trees. They can reach 25 to 30 m high in the wild and 10 to 15 m when farmed. The fruit is fleshy and reddish, similar to small plums, and grows in large bunches of 3 to 15 kg. The palm tree requires a humid tropical climate, with an ideal annual temperature of 26°C. Originally from Western Africa, they were exported to Malaysia in the 1970’s. The fruit and grains provide much sought-after oil, widely used in the food-industry, in cosmetics or in industry. The palm grain is made up of an epidermis, a very oily yellow and orangish pulp and a hard shell. In food, it is the main ingredient of grain sauce. The pulp of the fruit gives palm oil.
